What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a restoration that is designed to replace a missing tooth within the mouth. Implants are made of titanium, so they are incredibly durable and lasting. Your new implant can last for decades without showing any signs that it’s wearing or becoming damaged. One or more implants can be placed at a time to hold crowns, bridges and full dentures in place.
Why are Dental Implants needed?
The reason you’d want or need an implant is because you’re missing teeth. If you’re missing just one tooth, a single implant can be placed. If you’re missing multiple teeth, we can place several implants that are designed to hold onto a fixed dental bridge or overdenture. Implants work on their own, so they require no other teeth within the mouth to be compromised.
Who is a candidate for Dental Implants?
In order for your implant to heal properly, it has to be placed in an area with enough healthy and solid bone structure. The implant will bond with the bone over the course of a few months. If you do not have enough bone in the area where the implant will be placed, we will recommend a bone graft. This helps to build up the area where the bone is missing, which can benefit the success rate of your new implant.
What happens during the Dental Implant process?
The implant procedure will begin with either a sedative or anesthetic that will relax you during surgery. An incision is made to gain access to the underlying bone. We then make a tunneled hole into the jawbone and insert the implant itself. The implant is given several months to heal and fuse with the surrounding bone. You will come in to have the implant checked during this healing process. We then make a restoration for you that will fit over the new implant to restore your smile.
