What Can You Not Eat After Dental Implants?
Dental implants have become a go-to option for many individuals who need to replace a missing tooth. Rather than wear a removable appliance or having to compromise surrounding dentition, implants work on their own to replace just what is missing. Most implants can last for roughly 30 to 40 years or longer with proper oral care and hygiene. Once implants have healed, they’re a restoration that you simply will not have to think about or have to replace.
What are Implants?
Implants are most often made out of titanium. Titanium has long been used in surgical procedures as it’s been proven save to be used inside the human body. The implant’s post is placed deep into the jawbone. Over the course of a few months, the implant will undergo a process known as osseointegration. This refers to the process in which the implant will fuse with the bone and become an integral, permanent part of your smile.
What Should You Avoid Eating?
After implant surgery, it is important to stick to a soft food diet for the first two to three weeks. This allows the gums to heal and the implant itself to begin bonding with the bone. You should try to avoid eating foods that are hard, crunchy, sticky or gummy. These types of foods can irritate the gums, cause swelling of the surgical site and may even dislodge the implant itself. Once the implant has been given time to heal and fuse with the underlying bone, you can go back to eating the foods you love and enjoy. Some of the different foods you should avoid eating include:
- Hard breads
- Crunchy chips and pretzels
- Hard or small nuts and seeds
- Gums and chewy candy
- Crunchy veggies or fruits
- Hard mints
Foods That You Can Eat While Your Implants Heal
For the first few weeks following implant surgery, it’s best to stick to softer foods that won’t irritate the gums or dislodge the implant while it’s healing. If you notice any problems with your implant, including severe pain, inflammation or abscessing weeks after the procedure, it is important to come in to have an examination. Some of the different foods you can enjoy while your implants heal include:

- Soft fruits (bananas)
- Baked or roasted fruits and veggies
